Foundations of Plantsmanship: A Beginner’s Guide

“I highly recommend you meet my friend Mary; she’s an expert in plants.”

I tend to be a calm individual. I go with the flow, letting life take its course around me.

However, terms like ‘plantsman’ or ‘plantswoman’ provoke a reaction in me. I always try to stay polite, but I do question people who label themselves with this term. What does ‘plantsperson’ even mean? In gardening circles, the term is thrown around often, yet its exact definition seems elusive.

From my observations, those calling themselves ‘plantspeople’ usually fit into one of three groups:

  1. Those with extensive plant collections.

  2. Those with numerous strong views.

  3. Those who possess deep knowledge about plants.

Speaking of plant collections, they typically fall under two types:

Botanical collections are organized by keen gardeners who accumulate a variety of plants based on a common theme. This can range from plants of a certain region or habitat, belonging to a particular botanical family or genus, or even those cultivated by a specific breeder or within a certain time frame. The most impressive of these collections serve as essential reference points for all. On the other hand, there are collections amassed simply because someone enjoys owning a variety of plants. While there’s no harm in this, spending freely at a nursery doesn’t necessarily equate to expertise.

Holding opinions about plants and gardens is natural. However, voicing those opinions can sometimes backfire. As the timeless advice goes, “Speak kindly or remain silent.” Some individuals in the plant community have crafted an image for themselves merely by being outspoken, occasionally crossing into rudeness. A well-cared-for plant, cultivated by a passionate gardener, deserves public admiration.

Understanding plants brings me joy. I relish the ability to recognize and appreciate plants in gardens. While not everyone is a plant aficionado, I often wonder about those who rush through gardens. To me, understanding and appreciating plants at a leisurely pace is fulfilling. A seasoned gardener once shared a profound insight: newcomers in gardening often feel they know all there is, while experts realize the vastness of what they can never fully understand. With my increasing experience, I’ve recognized that gardening expertise is ever-evolving. Some may find this daunting, while others might find it exhilarating.

Throughout my life, I’ve encountered individuals with remarkable plant knowledge, ranging from those who specialize in certain plants to those with broad expertise. I deeply appreciate everyone who has expanded my horizons.

Knowledge is invaluable and must be cherished.

In any society, individuals seek recognition. Some earn respect through kindness, while others attempt to overshadow others. This isn’t exclusive to gardening. People who resort to negativity should be disregarded. Deriding others achieves no good, and buying plants doesn’t automatically elevate one’s status.

I often ponder about those who leave plant shops with vehicles overflowing with plants. Do they possess vast gardens, or do they have a tendency to neglect plants?

A Genuine Plant Enthusiast: As we immerse ourselves in the world of plants, let’s set our egos aside and embrace it with an open spirit. We can all find joy in this shared passion. Sharing plants might not always be feasible, but imparting our experiences and wisdom surely is. A genuine plant enthusiast eagerly shares their expertise and zeal. When in the presence of such an individual, we should feel inspired and invigorated, not belittled for not having the rarest specimens.

*By ‘library,’ I’m referring to an unorganized cluster of bookshelves in a room, brimming with assorted gardening books.
