Improved Footwear for Gardening and a Cherished Rain Gauge
Gardening, for many of us, is a labor of love. We think about the plants, the soil, the design, and the weather, but how often do we think about our feet? It seems that for a long while, I too had overlooked the importance of good, supportive footwear in the garden.
A decade ago, my gardening wardrobe featured a range of shoes, most of them unspectacular and purely utilitarian. My beloved Crocs were at the top of this list. They were easy, quick to throw on, and they served their purpose. However, they weren’t exactly a beacon of foot health.
But things change. A sudden onset of plantar fasciitis, a condition all too familiar to many, made me reconsider my shoe choices. My therapist recommended Hoka walking shoes. While I’ve yet to take them on a long, exploratory walk, I’ve already invested in their Ora Recovery 3 Slider for everyday use. And what a difference! These shoes have cushioning that feels like walking on a cloud, and the support they offer is evident.
Style-wise, they may not be the pinnacle of fashion, but they’re a step up from my dirty old Crocs. The realization soon followed that when it comes to health and comfort, it’s worth splurging a little. After all, what’s the point of saving if you can’t spend on something that adds quality to your life?
Another addition to my gardening routine is the rain gauge. It’s a simple, yet effective tool that tells me precisely how much rain my garden has received. No more guessing! Whether it’s a drizzle or a downpour, I now have an exact measurement. Though, a word of caution to fellow gardeners: remember to bring in your glass gauges during the colder months. I learned this the hard way when I discovered mine shattered, a casualty of the winter frost.
In the grand scheme of things, these changes might seem trivial. But gardening is as much about the gardener as it is about the garden. Ensuring that we have the right tools and attire not only enhances our experience but also ensures that we can continue doing what we love for years to come. So, here’s to good shoes and accurate rain measurements! Happy gardening!
