Garden-Related Getaways Remain the Ultimate Holiday Escape
It might come off more as an endorsement than a mere opinion, but it’s crucial for me to convey my gratitude for quality garden centers during this season. The outdoors doesn’t offer much engagement at the moment, settling into its typical pre-snow dullness. (Here, a blanket of snow is our version of “winter charm.”)
I have around 40 bulbs waiting to be planted, which I plan to tackle this weekend. It’s not the most thrilling activity, but I’m grateful it’s still on my to-do list.
However, when the craving for verdant and aromatic surroundings strikes, I’m fortunate to have access to several – if not more – independent garden centers and plant shops. These are places where I can purchase greenery to enliven my home’s interior.
Many acquaintances venture into forests and meadows to gather evergreen branches, red dogwood, berries, and festive decorations. But for me, the search seems a bit tedious, uncertain, and quite frankly, bleak. The weather hasn’t shifted into that refreshing, clear cold phase yet.
My top pick among local garden centers boasts a diverse range of evergreens, including exotic ones possibly not native to our region. They have an array of blooming plants and a vast collection of (primarily natural) poinsettias. The ambiance is enhanced with offerings of warm cider, hot chocolate, cookies, and occasionally some spirited beverages.
What you won’t find there are mechanical Santas, Reindeers, or the commercial plastic clutter that overwhelms big stores during this season. Those can easily make one weary of the holiday spirit.
I sometimes manage to transition the blooming plants into enduring indoor greenery, though not always. I utilize the evergreens to embellish both interiors and exteriors; the outdoor displays endure throughout winter.
Local garden centers put in significant efforts to remain pertinent year-round, especially during periods when gardening activities dip.
I genuinely value their presence. This season inherently comes with its stresses, even for those who attempt to remain detached. While the usual end-of-the-year pressures persist, these garden centers allow me to transform my home into a sanctuary. The garden might be out of commission for now, but thanks to these establishments, I can recreate its essence indoors.
