The Philadelphia Flower Show Emerges into the Spotlight

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) boldly decided to take their annual late winter event outdoors for the 2021 flower show. An event with an impressive 193-year history, the theme for this year was “Habitat: Nature’s Masterpiece,” fittingly held at the historic FDR Park, designed by Olmsted.

The outdoor experience wasn’t perfect, as one would expect from the unpredictability of nature. A thunderstorm interrupted the show, causing evacuations. However, for most attendees, including on June 12, the environment was idyllic: perfect weather, vibrant banners, roving entertainers, and friendly volunteers.

A highlight was Nomad Studio’s Kokedama Forest, a massive installment that appeared both familiar to the usual indoor shows but simultaneously more expansive, owing to the outdoor setting.

Schaffer Design’s installation, ‘A Designer’s Habitat,’ though not as appreciated by all, brought a touch of whimsy and grandeur to the show.

The winner of the Best in Show, ‘Etherea’ by Wambui Ippolito, showcased a myriad of lush plants, from roses and foxgloves to phlox and salvia. The masterpiece was not just beautiful but also a garden design many could envision replicating in their backyards.

Many designs celebrated the idea of tranquility within nature. For instance, Donald Pell Gardens showcased ‘The Wild Garden’, encapsulating the idea of serenity amidst a protective wilderness.

Similarly, Treeline Designz’s ‘Dancing with Nature’ emphasized a harmonious relationship between humans and their environment.

The ‘Garden’ section was equally impressive, featuring lovely displays from local garden clubs and students. Meanwhile, the ‘Plant District’ housed plant vendors, showcasing a variety that is seldom seen during March.

However, the most significant difference from the usual indoor events was the sheer space. The expansive venue allowed for more walkways and social distancing and accommodated a larger number of exhibits. Despite some weather challenges, the show was a success, drawing more attendees than expected.

As for the future? While the initial idea was to return indoors post-COVID, the overwhelming positive response to the outdoor show has left the decision up in the air. Regardless of where it is held, the PHS Flower Show continues to be an event that garden enthusiasts eagerly await.
